Cabane à sucre Vanier, Vanier Sugar Shack
320 Peres-Blanc Avenue
One of the oldest suburbs of Ottawa, Vanier Ontario, is known for its distinct character and charm, with a mixed French Canadian and anglophone population. Nestled in the woods of the Vanier Museopark, a modest building sits cozily among the trees. The Vanier Sugar Shack, or Cabane à sucre, was established in 1939 and is the only working sugar shack located in an urban setting in Canada. Families for generations have enjoyed eating fresh maple toffee off the snow, learning about the age-old process of sugaring, and enjoying pancake breakfasts where the maple syrup flows like wine. The shack itself had been rebuilt several times over the years to accommodate the needs of the community. In 2020, the shack suffered a tragic arson-related fire that unfortunately destroyed the building. Not to be discouraged, the community came together to rebuild the shack. The new shack is slightly bigger, and now includes better accessibility, but still maintains the quaint charm of the original structure. This image depicts the shack as it looked before the fire, with its simple design and darling hand-made sign.
